SACS2 and SMASH are two ESA-funded projects with main objectives to develop and validate new algorithms for the quantitative retrieval of volcanic ash and SO2 plumes for polar orbiting satellite instruments.
These validation reports are for the Eyjafjallajökull (April 2010) and Grímsvötn (May 2011) test cases, and the 2011 Etna lava fountains.
The Support to Aviation Control Service (SACS) hosted by the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy aims at supporting the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centers, like Toulouse VAAC and London VAAC.
This is achieved by delivering NEAR REAL-TIME data derived from satellite measurements regarding volcanic emissions by UV-visible (OMI, GOME-2A, GOME-2B, OMPS) and InfraRed (AIRS, IASI-A, IASI-B) instruments.
In case of volcanic eruptions, notifications from our multi-sensors system are sent out by email to interested parties.

in case of exceptional concentrations detected by satellite instruments.

"true" or "false" notifications, is entirely in the hands of the Users.
